Cap: parbolic or bell-shaped then opening to broadly conical, dry, smooth. Immature caps are semiglobose. Colour variable from dark grey to sooty black but rapidly drying to pallid grey or light brown.
Gills: pallid grey becoming black mottled with grey patches, margins light.
Stem: cylindrical, hollow, smooth with fine white powder dusted over the surface
Spore print: black
Habitat: Grow in small groups on dung, especially that of horses.
Notes: Common and widespread.
